I’ve always loved print advertising and get a special kick out of creating a tone of voice, writing headlines and designing impactful ads. To me, the important thing is to speak as clearly as possible, in a way that touches just the right nerve in the target audience.

Cobweb Case History – Triumph

This is more about me than it is about motorcycles. I don’t believe in presenting a client with ‘cannon fodder’ i.e. weaker work to sell the favourite, and was lucky enough to be working for a company that felt the same way. I believe everything that is presented to a client should be 100% on brief, strategically sound and talking to the consumer in their own language.

Here’s some campaign concept work for Triumph that didn’t make it. But had it, I reckon would have sold just as many bikes as the campaign they did decide on. Which, within 3 years, had increased sales of just their Daytona bike to match previous sales of the entire range! With 10 bikes in their range, all flying out of showrooms, gold and silver awards for print and TV at The New York Festivals, Triumph were a very happy client.

TGF Poker required a complete rebrand including logo design. They specifically requested it be shiny and modern, but with a distinctly traditional casino/poker club feel to it. Here’s some of my working designs. This was round three, the client had decided on the card silhouette and requested an exploration of fonts and colour.

James Walker Construction required a logo design and brand image that had the feel of an established family business, that was clean, professional and elegant. The ‘W’ of Walker was nothing short of an architectural gift, which instantly gives the feeling of construction – without being overt or cliché.

Sunset Surf

As a popular holiday destination, a campaign of free postcards available in their café was the perfect way to get customers to distribute their advertising for them. The tone of voice of the ads helped Sunset Surf to create a cheeky, slightly irreverent and uniquely ‘surfy’ brand image, which resonated with consumers and had them posting them to friends.

Helen approached me and asked if I could produce a campaign of small posters that she could use to promote her business. She specifically didn’t want a ubiquitous flier crowded with info. Instead the approach was a simple conceptual message for each ad to generate contact and interest.
